SMB is an Italian company specializing in precision measurement instruments for the marine industry. Founded in 2023, it builds on more than 25 years of seagoing experience gained through collaboration with leading classification societies and the development of tailored solutions for naval architects, shipyards, and shipowners. More than 2,000 measurements carried out on every type of vessel, from fishing boats and ferries to ocean-going tugboats, have transformed a business originally focused on certification and regulatory compliance into something far more advanced.
Most SMB components are designed and manufactured in Italy, to rigorous specifications developed and tested directly on board. This is not a commercial detail, it is a technical choice. Controlling production means controlling quality, down to the last screw.
The choice of materials is thorough and allows no compromises. Every component is selected with longevity in mind, as well as resistance to marine conditions: vibrations, high temperatures, humidity, chemicals. We want our instruments to cause no problems: not at installation, not after one year, not after ten.
Our standards come from real-world use: the genuine article, with everything the sea brings with it. And from the conviction that uncompromising quality is not a cost; it is the only way to build instruments that are truly reliable and truly durable. <br>

Ever Given — Suez Canal
We certified the bollard pull of the tugboat that took part in freeing the grounded container ship: 120 tonnes. A certification under pressure, in the most literal sense of the word.
150 fishing vessels — Italian Fishing Consortium
Between 2012 and 2016 we certified with RINA the kWh of 150 fishing vessels in the Italian Fishing Consortium. A project that took us on to every type of working vessel, in every condition.
Over 2,000 sea trials
Commercial vessels, ferries, fishing boats, work ships. Every trial added something, a technical detail, a new solution, a lesson that cannot be found in manuals.
And also… The 2006 Turin Winter Olympics
The Genoa Institute of Welding asked us to measure the pipeline carrying high-pressure ammonia for the artificial-ice refrigeration system of the bobsleigh track. We carried out strain-gauge tests and vibration measurements during the passage of a four-man bob at full speed. An extreme environment, a measurement that admitted no errors.
